Columbian drug lord and multibillionaire Pablo Escobar (1949-1993) once agreed to become a prisoner in his own prison. It was called “La Catedral”. It was built more than a fortress to keep people out, than to keep Escobar in. Amongst the luxuries within the prison complex were a jacuzzi, a private library, a bar and a soccer field. The guards were loyal to Escobar and it is rumoured that he even invited people and executed them within the prison compound. When it became publicly known that Escobar lived such a lavish lifestyle instead of being miserable, the Columbian authorities got embarrassed and had plans to transfer him to a real prison. Escobar escaped by simply walking out of the back door. He was eventually killed while on the run.
