The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration in the US military. Unbeknownst to many, there has actually been one female recipient.
Her name was Mary Edwards Walker (1832-1919). She was a feminist, abolitionist and first and foremost a fearless surgeon. During the American Civil War in the 1860s, she frequently crossed battlefields and operated on soldiers of both sides. Her bravery was so impressive, that eventually she received the Medal of Honor for her service.
