The invention of eyeglasses

While many rumors exist that eyeglasses were invented in China or India, the only factual evidence points to an unknown Italian as the inventor.

In 1306, eyeglasses are mentioned in a still preserved sermon as being a 20 year old invention. It is therefore save to say that glasses might have been invented around 1286 in Italy. Magnifying glasses however, have been around much longer and have been mentioned in texts before 400 BC.
