Discoveries of the Galileo

The Galileo was launched towards Jupiter in 1989, beginning a 14 year life of scientific discoveries. The spacecraft took the first close up image of an asteroid, discovered the first moon orbiting an asteroid, was the first to witness a comet plummet into a planet, and sent scientists many measurements and studies of Jupiter.

Leshan Giant Buddha

The Leshan Giant Buddha is a 71-meter (233 ft) tall stone statue, built between 713 and 803. It was the dream project of Haitong, a Chinese monk, who believed a Buddha would calm the waterways below.

When Soviets shot down American planes

During the Korean War (1950-1953) North Korean invaded South Korea, which was immediately helped by the United Nations (predominately US forces). Once the North was then overrun in a large counterattack, they asked other communist regimes for help.

The Russo-Japanese war (1904-1905) is a major 20th century war, which is often overlooked because of the much larger conflicts (i.e. World War 1, World War 2) that happened later.  The basic reason for the war between Russia and Japan was a mutual interest in controlling Korea and Manchuria.
