Benin Bronzes

The Benin Kingdom in modern day Nigeria was founded in 1180 and continued to exist until 1897. During the 1500s and 1700s, Benin produced  its greatest artwork such as the best Benin Bronzes, which are sculptures made of different materials (not only bronze).

Marib, the Kingdom of Saba and the Worlds oldest dam

At one point in time, Marib (in present day Yemen) was the capital of the Kingdom of Saba, which is mentioned in Christian, Jewish and Islamic texts. This city is also the site of the Marib Dam which blocked the Wadi Adhanah river and is the oldest known dam in the World.

Black Confederate soldiers

One of the reasons the American Civil War started was to end slavery of African-Americans. The Union (North) was against slavery and the Confederates (South) were pro-slavery because their main businesses were depending on it.

The day Gaddafi went too far

In 1996, Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi (1942 – 2011) was informed of a prison revolt in Abu Salim prison. The revolt initially began because the prisoners lawyer was arrested himself and the living conditon were horrendous.
