Human Zoos

Only decades ago, human zoos were very popular. The main purpose was to entertain by showing off people of foreign ethnicities like animals. Africans, Native Americans, Asians and many other peoples were captured and brought to Europe or North America, where they were kept under horrid conditions.

Even young children were not spared. This extremely racist practice was one of the more disgusting forms of colonialism . In some instances, human zoos were open until the 1950s. It was no sideshow. Millions of people paid to see these “wild people”.
