Many people believe that the Mongol Empire was the largest there has ever been. However, the British Empire was slightly larger.
At its peak in 1922 it was around 33.7 million km² (or 13 million mi²) slightly larger than the Mongol Empire in its prime. In comparison to modern day Russia (17 million km²) it was twice as big. It also was home to around 458 million people and included todays Canada, India, Australia, large parts of Africa and – of course – England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
