Indonesia, 1965: After a failed coup to seize power on Sept 30, the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), several leftist groups and many ethnic Chinese were blamed for the attempt.
This eventually turned into mass killings in all of Indonesia. The Indonesian army started, encouraged and condoned killings in many regions. It was easy to become a target. Many times, accusations were enough and whole towns were wiped out. The mass slaughter continued over the next few months until early 1966. It is still unknown how many people have been killed, but even moderate estimates start at 500,000 and go as high as 3 million.
